BankPDFtoXLS for budgeting

The short answer: Convert your statements, download Excel or CSV, and sort the rows by payee. A pivot table then totals each kind of spending by month, so you see where your money went.

  • We check every running balance, so a missing or misread row shows.
  • We read the statements of most banks, scans included.
  • If you take a plan, you can cancel it any time.
Drop your statement here PDF up to 25 MB. Scans and photos saved as PDF, and password-protected PDFs, work too.

What a year of statements becomes

  • Every payment as a row. Each one has its date, its payee and its amount, in columns you can sort.
  • Payees side by side. Sort by description, and the year's payments to each shop or service sit together.
  • Months you can compare. A pivot table totals each kind of spending for each month.

How to budget from bank statements

  1. Download the statements for the months you want from your bank as PDFs.
  2. Drop the first one in the box at the top of this page, and we show you its first page converted.
  3. Sign up to download it. You do not need a card: your free trial converts 15 pages, so you can check the result before you pay. Then take a plan, and upload the statements in your account one after another.
  4. Download Excel, or CSV for a budgeting app or a script. Check any row the Ledger column marks break.
  5. Paste the months into one sheet, under one header row, and sort by description.
  6. Add a Category column: housing, bills, food, transport, other. Fill it in for one payee, then copy it down that payee's rows.
  7. Insert a pivot table: categories down, months across, the amounts summed.
Category January February March
Housing -1,150.00 -1,150.00 -1,150.00
Bills -212.40 -198.75 -205.10
Food -436.85 -401.20 -459.60
Transport -128.00 -142.50 -119.30
Subscriptions -47.97 -47.97 -55.96

Sample figures, not a real statement.

The categories are yours to choose. We give you the rows as the statement prints them, and you decide which group each one belongs to.

Questions

Excel or CSV?

Excel, if you will sort and total the rows yourself: the money columns are numbers, and each account gets its own sheet. CSV, if another app or a script reads the file next.

Banks print codes such as DD, SO and FPO beside each payment. Our guide to bank statement codes explains each one.

Do I need a plan for a few statements?

When you sign up, you get a free trial of 15 pages, with no card, and we convert up to 5 pages of each statement. For longer statements, you need a plan, from $29 USD per month for 500 pages. You can cancel any time.

What happens to my statements?

We encrypt the PDF. Once the statement is in your account, we delete the PDF as soon as it is converted. We keep the spreadsheet for a while, then delete it too. If you drop a statement in and do not sign in, we delete it. No person reads statements you upload. Our privacy policy says what we keep, and for how long.
