BankPDFtoXLS turns an HSBC statement PDF into a spreadsheet with the columns the statement prints. HSBC leaves most rows without a balance, so the converter works out each missing balance and checks every one it can.

What an HSBC statement looks like

• An HSBC statement has five columns: Date, Payment type and details, Paid out, Paid in and Balance.
• The details start with a payment type code: ))) for a contactless payment, VIS for a Visa debit card payment, BP for a bill payment, CR for a credit, and others such as DD, TFR and ATM. The code stays at the start of the description cell. What each code means.
• The date is printed only on the first transaction of each day, written like 09 May 22.
• HSBC usually prints the balance once a day, against the day's last transaction.
• BALANCE BROUGHT FORWARD and BALANCE CARRIED FORWARD lines come through as rows of their own.

What the spreadsheet looks like

Where HSBC printed no balance, the converter works it out from the rows around it, fills it in, and marks the row filled in the Ledger column.

How we test it

The converter is tested against three HSBC statements: 194 transactions in all, and the Ledger column flags none of them. 79 balance against a balance HSBC printed. The converter filled in the other 115, which are mostly the rows HSBC prints no balance for.
