BankPDFtoXLS turns a Commonwealth Bank statement PDF into a spreadsheet with the columns the statement prints, and it checks every balance on the way. It reads both the statement CommBank issues and the transaction list you can save as a PDF from NetBank.
What a CommBank statement looks like
- A CommBank statement has five columns: Date, Transaction, Debit, Credit and Balance.
- The balance carries CR when the account is in credit and DR when it is overdrawn, as in $6,183.66 CR. The converter reads CR and DR as the sign of the balance, so an overdrawn balance is never read as money you had.
- A card purchase carries its value date in the details, such as Value Date: 28/12/2019. It stays in the description cell.
- The date is printed as day and month, such as 03 Jan, with the year left to the statement's period.
What a NetBank transaction list looks like
- A list saved from NetBank has four columns: Date, Transaction details, Amount and Total, the balance after each transaction, with the newest transaction first.
- Each amount and balance carries its sign, as in - $159.06 or
- $49,528.99, and the converter reads the sign as printed.
What the spreadsheet looks like
| Date | Transaction | Debit | Credit | Balance | Ledger |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 01 Jan | OPENING BALANCE | $1,520.00 CR | ok | ||
| 02 Jan | A SUPERMARKET SYDNEY NS AUS Card xx1234 Value Date: 30/12/2019 | 48.20 | $1,471.80 CR | ok | |
| 03 Jan | Direct Credit A COMPANY PAYROLL | 1,640.00 | $3,111.80 CR | ok |
The rows above are an example, not a real statement.
How we test it
The converter is tested against two CommBank statements and one NetBank transaction list, 25 pages in all: 537 transactions. The Ledger column flags 3 of them, and each comes from the PDF itself: in one statement a balance that does not follow from the row before it as printed, and in the NetBank list a balance whose last digit the page hides under a button, which the converter reads as a reader sees it. Every other transaction balances against the row before it.
Convert a CommBank statement
- Drop the PDF into the converter on this page.
- Check page one in the preview. It is free, with no email and no card.
- Create an account to convert every page. The pricing page lists the plans.
To bring the transactions into your books, download the file for your accounting software from your list of statements: import it into Xero, QuickBooks or FreeAgent.
The PDF is deleted when its conversion finishes.
