BankPDFtoXLS turns a Santander statement PDF into a spreadsheet with the columns the statement prints, and it checks every balance on the way.
What a Santander statement looks like
- A Santander statement has five columns: Date, Description, Money in, Money out and Balance, with a £ sign in the Balance heading.
- Dates are ordinal and leave out the year, like 3rd Nov. The spreadsheet keeps them as printed, so Excel reads them as text, not as dates.
- Each description starts with the kind of transaction, such as DIRECT DEBIT, BILL PAYMENT, BANK GIRO CREDIT or STANDING ORDER.
- BALANCE BROUGHT FORWARD and BALANCE CARRIED FORWARD lines come through as rows of their own.
- Every row has its own balance.

How we test it
The converter is tested against two Santander statements: 47 transactions in all. 41 of them balance against the row before. The Ledger column marks the other 6 for you to check: 5 it filled in and 1 it flags.
