BankPDFtoXLS for Self Assessment

The short answer: Convert each statement in the tax year, download Excel, and give each row a category. A pivot table then totals the year's income and costs, for your return or for your accountant to check.

  • We check every running balance, so a missing or misread row shows.
  • We read the statements of most banks, scans included.
  • If you take a plan, you can cancel it any time.
Drop your statement here PDF up to 25 MB. Scans and photos saved as PDF, and password-protected PDFs, work too.

What a tax year of statements becomes

  • Income in rows. Payments from clients, rent and interest each arrive as a row with a date and an amount.
  • Costs to sort. Business costs sit beside personal spending, so you mark which is which.
  • Totals for the return. A pivot table gives the year's figure for each category.

How to total a tax year from bank statements

  1. Download every statement with days in the tax year, 6 April to 5 April, as PDFs.
  2. Drop the first one in the box at the top of this page, and we show you its first page converted.
  3. Sign up to download it. You do not need a card: your free trial converts 15 pages, so you can check the result before you pay. Then take a plan, and upload the statements in your account one after another.
  4. Download Excel. Check any row the Ledger column marks break.
  5. Paste the statements into one sheet, under one header row, and filter the dates to the tax year.
  6. Add a Category column: income, interest, rent, costs, personal.
  7. Insert a pivot table with Category in Rows and the amounts in Values.

Our guide to bank statements for Self Assessment covers each step in more detail.

Category Tax year
Self-employed income 31,200.00
Interest received 186.40
Business costs -4,915.60
Personal -18,402.75

Sample figures, not a real statement.

Which costs you can claim, and which income goes on which page of the return, is a question for your accountant or for HMRC's own guidance. The spreadsheet gives you the figures. It does not decide them.

Questions

Are the totals my tax figures?

Not on their own. They're the money that went through your account. Some income, such as an employer's pay or a pension, has its own figures from the payer, and some costs are only partly claimable. Check with your accountant.

My statements cross two tax years.

Convert every statement with days in the year, then keep only the rows from 6 April to 5 April with a date filter in Excel.

How much does a year of statements cost to convert?

Each page of PDF uses one page of credit. A year of monthly statements usually fits a Lite plan, $29 USD per month for 500 pages. You can cancel any time.

Is it safe to upload my statements?

We encrypt the PDF. Once the statement is in your account, we delete the PDF as soon as it is converted. We keep the spreadsheet for a while, then delete it too. If you drop a statement in and do not sign in, we delete it. No person reads statements you upload. Our privacy policy says what we keep, and for how long.
